Roy being disobedient caused an emotional violence in the story. John tries to stop Roy from sneaking out to the rockpile, but Roy is younger, has a stronger will than John does. But Roy will caused him to get injured. This shows readers that some people just don't, and will not listen. Roy was young, but he knew right from wrong. Roy had to evade many obstacles to get to the rockpile. First, John told him not to go, their mother stressed to them not to go to the rockpile, and he had his on state of mind, that should of said stop, but he did not listen and he had to suffer the consequences. Once Gabriel found out Roy was injured, Gabriel then tries to blame John, but Elizabeth sticks up for John, preventing him from getting a beaten. Elizabeth told Gabriel that Roy got injured because Gabriel spoils him. A question one might ask here is, "Why is John getting punished for Roy's mistake?".
Gabriel's character is portrayed as an abusive father/step father. John is being punished for Roy's mistake, and Roy is treated like a damsel in distress. Elizabeth did not step in because she was John mother, but because she knew what Gabriel was doing was unfair and not right. Gabriel blamed everybody except Roy, which shows the reader that Roy is the favorite. Gabriel told Elizabeth she was not watching Roy close enough, no that is not the case Roy was disobedient, and with every action there is a reaction. "The Rockpile" teaches readers that rules are enforced for a reason. Who knows what would of happen if Roy would of stayed on the balcony, if Roy and John were treated equal, readers will never know, but readers learned that all actions have a reaction. Not all reactions are good, and not all reaction are bad, but there will be a reaction.
